A selection of the world-renowned Lewis game pieces will soon return to Norway, as the British Museum has agreed to loan a set to NTNU University Museum in Trondheim. The exhibition, Havets Elfenbein (‘Ivory of the Sea’), opening on 6 May 2025, will explore the historical significance of the walrus ivory trade and the enigmatic origins of these extraordinary artefacts. The loan includes a king, a queen, a bishop, a knight, a pawn, and a warder—the equivalent of a rook in modern chess.
