In 2022, Moesgaard presented the special exhibition RUS – Vikings in the East, which explored the far-reaching journeys of Scandinavian traders and warriors. These Viking explorers, often referred to as the Rus, ventured through Eastern Europe, travelling along the great river systems that connected the Baltic to Byzantium and the Islamic world. Through trade, diplomacy, and conflict, they played a crucial role in shaping the early medieval landscape of Eastern Europe.
The exhibition showcased remarkable artefacts that illustrated the wealth, craftsmanship, and cultural exchanges that defined these travels. Visitors encountered weaponry, jewellery, coins, and everyday objects that told the story of Viking interactions with Slavic, Byzantine, and Arab societies.
