La Huella Vikinga (The Viking Footprint) explores how Viking culture and mythology continue to shape our modern imagination — from Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings to Wagner and Star Wars.
The author, Laia San José Beltrán, is a historian and cultural communicator from Barcelona who writes about the Nordic world and its enduring influence in contemporary culture.
I was commissioned by Roca Editorial to create a cover illustration that feels both authentically Nordic and visually striking, bridging the world of scholarship and popular storytelling.

“The cover illustration is simply AMAZING. You captured the idea perfectly — exactly what I wanted. People are freaking out over the cover!”

Concept
The cover unites figures from Nordic mythology and modern pop culture, reflecting the book’s central theme: how Viking imagery continues to echo through today’s mythmaking.
Each figure and motif carries dual meaning, rooted in historical legend but resonant with modern imagination:
- Sigurd and the dragon — the archetypal hero’s journey seen across countless narratives.
- A valkyrie on horseback — both Sigurd’s mythic love and a nod to heroines like Éowyn in The Lord of the Rings.
- A hooded rider on an eight-legged horse — merging Odin and Sleipnir with Gandalf’s shadowed wisdom.
- A great wolf — Fenrir and the direwolves of Game of Thrones, symbols of primal force.
- Ravens — Odin’s messenger and a familiar presence across modern fantasy worlds.
- Thor with his hammer — the ancient thunder god reborn as a modern hero.
- Tree-like ornamentation — inspired by Yggdrasil, interwoven with allusions to sacred trees in contemporary stories.
Visual References
The composition draws inspiration from the narrative flow of the early and pre-Viking Age Gotland picture stones — notably the Tjängvide and Ardre stones — where myths such as the saga of Sigurd the Dragon Slayer unfold through layered symbols in a sequential, almost comic-like layout.
The illustration’s ornamental language reflects the refined aesthetics of the late Viking Age Urnes and Ringerike styles, as seen in runestones like U 692, U 937, G 134, and Sö 101 — the latter once again depicting the Sigurd legend. The serpent-like dragons that frame many of these stones, their heads and tails intertwined at the base, serve both as borders and as narrative elements — and in a few examples, the creature itself represents Fáfnir, struck down by Sigurd.
Some runestones, such as G 134, even echo the distinctive keyhole shape of the much earlier Gotland picture stones, further bridging the visual traditions of different periods.
Additional inspiration comes from Viking Age valkyrie brooches, whose depictions of mounted female figures resonate with the mythic riders carved into the Gotland stones.
Together, these visual traditions embody the book’s central theme: the continual reinterpretation of myth and imagery across time.

Process
The entire illustration was hand-drawn in Procreate, maintaining a subtle handmade texture and organic flow throughout.
Rather than vectorizing or polishing away imperfections, I aimed to preserve the tactile quality of linework, allowing the image to feel alive and historically grounded.
The timelapse video captures this process from rough sketch to final detailing, showing how the intricate ornamentation took shape.
This project was about capturing the meeting point between myth and memory, translating the visual language of the Viking Age into something that feels alive today.
