This gaming piece, carved from walrus ivory, was found in a burial near the Oslofjord and dates to the late 10th century. Measuring only three centimetres in height, it represents the king in the board game Hnefatafl.
The figurine is notable for its detailed depiction of male grooming: the hair is parted in the middle, waved to the side to expose the ear, and cropped at the back. The face shows a large moustache, sideburns, and a long braided goatee, with even a slight curl above the ear, carefully rendered.
