The 8th century York Helmet is the most outstanding example of the Early English period to survive in Europe. On the crest is an inscription in Latin which translates as, ‘In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and God; and to all we say amen. Oshere’. Oshere was probably the name of its owner, possibly of the Northumbrian Royal Dynasty.
